A Pre-Wedding Shoot in York with a Special Mini-Guest: Laura, Martin and Nancy!

The countdown is on for Laura and Martin’s big day at the fabulous Barmbyfield Barns next month and I’m beyond excited to shoot their wedding there! Hope this good weather lasts.

Last Friday, they received their gallery from their pre-wedding shoot at Homestead Park in York. Pre-wedding shoots are a brilliant way for us to get to know each other better before your wedding day as well as for me to catch up on your plans and anything special you want from your photography. It’s a great chance for you to get used to having my camera pointing at you and to practise a few positions that we’ll probably use on your wedding day portraits.

It wasn’t all new for Laura and Martin when we met a couple of week’s ago for their shoot because I had photographed little Nancy at their home when she was a newborn. So it was extra special to have her along to take part in the shoot too and give Mummy and Daddy lots to smile about. Isn’t she a beauty?! If you want to see how much changes in a year, take a look at her newborn blog here!

3 weeks to go, gang! I can’t wait to see you there!

A Flower-Filled Springtime Wedding in York: Joanna and Jesper

It’s been a busy couple of weeks shooting and editing with 3 galleries sent off on Friday and 3 happy customers, yay!

So it’s time to catch up with a bit of blogging of the highlights of my recent work. The first is this stunning wedding from Gray’s Court in March. Naturally, I was overjoyed to be able to shoot Joanna and Jesper’s wedding here as it is one of York’s hidden gems and such a beautiful venue hidden in a cobbled lane behind York Minster.

Their’s was a totally sophisticated, intimate day with a close group of family and friends. The weather couldn’t have been much better for March which really set off the floral theme of the day and meant guests could enjoy drinks in the garden backing onto York’s city walls. This provided much entertainment for the tourists walking by!

As always, I loved the preparation stage of the day. I had a good explore of the venue and all of the stunning details and floral decorations. Then it was great fun to spend time with Joanna and her Mum while they got dressed and attended to some last minute dress alterations! Joanna looked absolutely stunning in her simple dress from Seni Dey.

The ceremony was perfect , with 2 beautiful readings from special friends.

Joanna and Jesper cut the cake during the drinks reception which I thought was a great idea as guests tucked into the delicious layers before the meal and meant no cake was wasted! What a beautiful cake it was, made by one of Joanna’s friends. Such talent!

After cake, we snuck out to have some fun shooting portraits around the beautiful venue and we just had to include the spectacular Minster backdrop! Don’t they just look gloriously happy together?!

The meal itself was taken in the bar area of Gray’s Court on one long table which was adorned with sumptuous arrays of flowers, candles and fairy lights - so classical and romantic. Jesper is from Denmark and, like the last wedding I blogged, of Joe and Viivi, there was a Scandinavian theme during the meal with some challenges for the guests thrown in, consisting of much banging and subsequent kissing from the bride and groom!

Joanna, Jesper and their families were lucky enough to hire the venue for the whole weekend so there was a really relaxed feel as everyone could kick-back and settle in without the pressure to be anywhere. A perfect celebration for them all, especially as Jesper’s close family had flown in!

This was my first time shooting at Gray’s Court and I can’t wait to go back! I had such a lovely, relaxed day with Joanna and Jesper and just loved the styling and laid-back yet sophisticated atmosphere of their day. Wishing them so many years of happiness to come.

Thanks for having me there!

A Sunny Winter Wedding Near York: Joe and Viivi

Joe and Viivi struck gold in February with the weather for their wedding day at The Hawkhills in Easingwold! You’ll see from the pictures that it was better than many Spring/Summer days; the sun shone and we could happily be outside without coats. Wow!

It was a really interesting day because it was actually their second wedding day in as many weeks! Joe and Viivi live in Finland and had their wedding ceremony there the week before. Apparently the weather wasn’t as kind to them there, athough I saw a few pictures from that day and the snowy scenes made for an incredible backdrop! So this day was a celebration for family and friends who could not make it abroad, as well as many who were there too. Joseph’s family are from Easingwold so it is a special venue for them.

Because there was no wedding ceremony itself, the format for the day was a little different to normal which I loved. I met the couple for preparations in the lovely bridal suite at Hawkhills. Viivi’s hair and makeup was done by the brilliant Sarah Russell from Birmingham. After they had a relaxed lunch together in their room and got dressed, we went outside for a few group shots and couple portraits before the guests arrived. I loved this part of the day as the grounds are very beautiful and we had so much fun exploring the various dramatic walls, fields and trees on offer! When Viivi suggested walking on a bit further than I had dared to ask to some nearby woodland, I jumped at the chance and I’m soooo happy we did!

Highlights from the day were a presentation of photographs from Joe and Viivi’s Mums documenting their lives growing up, friendships and relationship which was really touching and the personalised forfeits that all the guests received to carry out during the sit down meal (a Scandinavian tradition - love it!). One guest had to stand up and give an impromptu speech, completely unprepared - a braver person than me! Not that he came across as shy! Then in the evening Joe and Viivi demonstrated another Finnish wedding tradition by playing a version of ‘Mr and Mrs’ involving holding up their shoes. Hilarious! Oh yes and I mustn’t forget to mention my ‘extreme photographer’ moment up on a roof edge to capture the whole group shot. My knees were a bit wobbly after that!

As always I felt very lucky to be able to spend the day closely with a lovely couple and their friends and family, who felt like friends of mine by the end.

Joe and Viivi’s life in Finland sounds fascinating and romantic. They live on an island and catch a ferry to get to university. I hope I can visit their beautiful country one day and will be getting in touch if I do!

Mums, You Rock!

It’s Mother’s Day compilation time!

Here are just some of the lovely Mummies I have been lucky to photograph over the last year. I hope you all, and all the others not featured, have a lovely relaxing day with lots of treats.

Well done for all the immeasurable, often unseen, things you do all day every day.

I’ve been lucky: a coffee in bed, flowers, chocs, earrings, hand cream, thoughtful cards, scrambled eggs and hugs. The one year old squawking mini-dictator doesn’t understand the concept of relaxation so we’ll see how the rest goes but it’s been good so far! If I can watch Andrew Marr in peace, I’ll be happy.

Rock n Roll times!

A Family Shoot at Fountains Abbey: The Mars

Have I mentioned that I love where I live? Oh yes, only every bloody Blog post! Not only is York itself beautiful, vibrant and increasingly diverse, but it’s also close to so many brilliant shooting spots around Yorkshire.

This week’s featured shoot to place at the stunning Fountains Abbey on a blustery but sunny Sunday morning a couple of weeks ago. We got out pretty early so avoided the crowds and the rain!

I photographed the Mars family a couple of years ago when I was with bump and since then they’ve had another new addition too! It was brilliant to be asked to do a family re-visit shoot and to catch up again. It was Helen’s last day before returning to school from maternity leave: a special way to end it.

Arthur was a little star for the camera and hasn’t Hector got the most scrumptious cheeks?!

There are so many exciting backdrops, nooks and crannies at Fountains Abbey that I could happily shoot there all day! Would be delighted to go back for another shoot there any time if anyone fancies it!

Here are some best bits!

York Family Photographer: A Big Birthday Celebration Shoot!

Spring is here! Well it was last week! This has brought a flurry of family shoot enquiries to my inbox which makes me very happy as I’ve missed them over the dark Winter months.

People often ask me to do a family shoot to mark a special occasion. Some involve a bit of a journey to an amazing location (see my upcoming Blog post about my Fountains Abbey family shoot!) whereas some are closer to home.

This shoot proved that you don’t have to go far to get some fantastic family portraits as it took place literally at the bottom of my road (lucky me)! It was close to home for Emma and her family too as we happen to be neighbours! It’s always lovely to be asked to take photographs for a friend, with a little bit of added pressure thrown in as of course you want them to be extra happy with the results.

Emma had wanted some family portraits for a while and the event of her ‘big’ birthday seemed like a great time to get it done. She had felt a little apprehensive beforehand about whether it would be weird and awkward to have a camera in your face for an hour but soon felt at ease, she told me.

We had a lovely hour strolling through some wooded areas near home where the boys could explore the new Forest Schools dens and pathways. We then mooched back along the riverside towards the ever-photogenic Millennium Bridge, even finding some newly-revealed communal gym equipment along the way where the boys could play. Shame about the plastic wrapping left behind, ahem!

Like Emma (and me), someone in your family is probably hardly ever in the shots as you’re behind the camera. So it’s well worth investing in some beautiful, professional shots of you all together as those kids will be fully grown before you know it (sob!). I promise you won’t find it awkward as an hour flies by chatting and playing while I take some snaps along the way. You’ll soon forget about the camera and be amazed by the spontaneous not-been-seen-for-years hugging that often occurs between siblings!

Have you got a special occasion coming up?

Or maybe you’re never in the shots, your kids are growing too fast and you’d love some natural and relaxed family portraits like these?

I’d love to hear from you!

York Baby Photographer: A 5 Month Old Baby Shoot at Home

I’m a lucky lady! Spending my time working with lovely, loved-up couples and beautiful babies! It’s been a busy fortnight of baby photography. Here are a few highlights from another recent shoot…

This time, a scrummy baby girl and her Mum shot at their home on her 5 month birthday! I love the bond you can see between these two. I think they are definitely going to be best friends for life.

My newborn and baby photoshoots take place at your home. I love to capture you as you really are, featuring any special toys and blankets of yours which will make it really personal.

I’ll give you some guidance and get you into flattering positions utilising the available light to its best, but I believe in photographing babies ‘unposed’!

Are you expecting or know someone who is? Check out my Newborn and Baby Gallery for more examples.

York Baby Photographer: A 5 Month Old Baby Shoot at Home

Hello! Here’s another beautiful baby to make your ovaries tingle, ladies! This week I was paid a visit by this photogenic pair and we got some amazing shots.

My newborn and baby shoots take place at home so everyone can feel comfortable and relaxed. You know by now that my style is natural; I don’t go in for the over-posed baby malarkey! For me, it’s about capturing your baby and your family as you really are so that you always have that moment in time to look back on and remember how sweet they were.

I like to keep it pretty simple but I do love to incorporate favourite teddies, blankets and anything really personal to your family. You’ll see in this gallery a photo we used of baby’s Grandad - a lovely, personal touch.

Don’t be put off if you feel your home is a bit small or cluttered. I can (and do!) work with pretty much any scenario. So long as there is a window we’re onto a winner. I may just need to clear a little space and move the odd bit of furniture to make sure the light is flattering and the shots are crisp and clutter-free for the best effect.

Expecting or know someone who is? Or maybe you’re a new parent? I love shooting babies of all ages and stages. Do get in touch for more info.

Yorkshire Newborn Photographer: Baby Charlotta

A Baby Revisit Shoot at Home in York!

Hello! This is the second of this week’s bumper baby blogs about my latest baby shoots, this one featuring 8 month old Charlotta. I photographed this stunner when she was a newborn back in August and I was really excited about the results from the amazing natural light coming in through huge windows at this house in contrast with their dramatic dark walls and furnishings inside. Not to mention the baby blues on this girl!

So when I was looking to collect a few more examples for my Guild of Photographers portfolio, I knew it would be wonderful to photograph Charlotta again now that she is older.

We created a little space in the living room where she could crawl around and play while I snapped. I brought a couple of props with me on this shoot for a bit of fun. Thanks to my daughter for the loan of her beloved giant TY teddies!

I’m delighted with the results. As I mentioned in my Aria blog, this set up was a little more staged than I usually do going into someone’s house for a lifestyle shoot but the pictures maintain the natural feel that I love so it’s given me ideas for future ways of creating stunning portraits when I do baby and family shoots at home. Very exciting!

If you’d like to see Charlotta when she was a newborn, you can see examples in my ‘Baby Love’ gallery.!

I love photographing babies of all ages with their families and I’m brimming with ideas of shots to try to make each shoot unique.

Had a baby recently or know someone who’s expecting? I’d love to hear from you!

Yorkshire Baby Photographer: Baby Aria

A Baby Shoot in My Own Home!

Hello! I’ve been busy lately focusing on my wedding work which has been brilliant but I have been missing my baby shoots! So it has been great this fortnight to have two beautiful babies to photograph. For a while now, I’ve been doing some work behind the scenes ready to submit for judgement to the prestigious Guild of Photographers and I just needed a few more specific examples so I asked these Mums if I could borrow their babes to model for me.

Followers will know that my usual baby shoots involve going to clients’ houses and photographing their baby/siblings/dogs exactly as things are which I love. It can sometimes be quite challenging in terms of the space and light available as you never know whet you’re going to get!

So this shoot and my next, which you can see here, were a little more staged than usual so that I could set up a few particular types of shot. I photographed 4 month old Aria in my own living room which I was able to set up as a mini-natural light studio. It’s has been so fun to try something a bit different with the way I shoot and I’m really pleased with the results, mainly because I think I’ve kept things in my natural style even though these shots were a little more pre-planned. I hope you agree!

I’m sure you’ll definitely agree that Aria is simply scrummy and so cute in her little hat!

For more examples, take a look at my ‘Baby Love’ gallery.

I love photographing babies of all ages with their families and I’m brimming with ideas of shots to try.

First of the year! A Sheffield Town Hall Wedding

I admire people who opt for Winter weddings! Let’s face it, we can’t rely on dry, warm weather in the Summer in Blighty so at least in Winter we can expect the worst and anything else is a bonus! Michelle and Paul had a real bonus day last week: a crisp, dry and mostly sunny January day for their lovely wedding at Sheffield Town Hall.

After a whopping 14 years of engagement, they finally got around to tying the knot! It was a lovely small and intimate wedding with just their closest family and friends. Even this was bigger than they originally wanted. Wedding plans have a habit of snowballing, don’t they, no matter what scale you are planning!

Michelle rocked up to the town hall in a gorgeous vintage motor from Cupid Carriages looking absolutely stunning in a beautiful red overcoat, vintage-look headpiece and heels, showing off her legs to die for! She later revealed a stylish and flattering knee-length lace number from Viola Unique, Cairns, under the coat which was an inspired choice for their day!

The ceremony was the perfect balance of laughs and emotion. At the end, the guests spontaneously burst into a Sheffield United version of Annie’s Song! Football plays an important part in Michelle and Paul’s life (as you’ll see from their cake!). A highlight, and first for me, was that the ceremony was being transmitted live by video phone to Michelle’s Mum and Dad over in Australia! It must have been a late night for them!

Following the ceremony, we took a few group shots on the walk round to the reception venue. Paul had seen and liked some of my more ‘kooky’ group shot examples in my portfolio and was keen to capture his guests looking ‘goofy’! Fine by me - you know I don’t want people to look or feel too stiff in their shots!

The reception was held at Ego Restaurant which made the perfect, relaxed choice for a fun, low-key wedding with the people most special to them. Speeches first then it was on to drinking, eating and enjoying. I love the speeches part of the day! It is such an honour to be there and I always feel like I get to know the couples really well through the lovely, funny things people say about them. Michelle said Paul had been preparing quite nervously for his speech but he needn’t have worried about it - he was a natural and a funny guy!

Thank you, Michelle and Paul, it was so wonderful to be with you on your wedding day - you are obviously a special couple. 14 years was definitely worth the wait! Wishing you many more years of happiness together.

Happy New Year - York Wedding Photographer

2018 was an amazing year! I’m still crazy about my lifestyle newborn shoots but I’ve taken my business in a new loved-up direction as well. Thank you to all my lovely, laid-back couples who made it so much fun! Also thanks to some of the U.K.’s biggest and best wedding blogs who chose to publish some of the brilliant weddings I have been lucky enough to shoot: Brides Up North, Boho Weddings and Whimsical Wonderland Weddings. This has helped give me the confidence to keep pushing forwards in pursuing my dreams. Yay!

I’ve had a much-needed break over Christmas and New Year with lots of family time, lots of food and (too many) drinks. My baby even let me have a few good nights sleep, hurrah! So I’m feeling recharged and excited about the year ahead and all the fabulous weddings (and babies) to come!

I love Christmas but I’m always ready to get back to normal life and making fresh plans by this time of year. Hope you’ve had a good one too!

I love all the little story-telling details of a wedding that make each day unique and that so much thought has gone into: the flowers, the clothes, the sinage, the food and cake, the jewellery, the entertainment. I don’t always share those shots so I thought I’d share a few faves from last year here to give you a bit of a flavour. Hope you enjoy!
